The win marked UNC’s first win against Duke since 2011, and the team celebrated with exuberance, a little too much exuberance.

According to the the Herald-Sun, the team’s raucous celebration, in which they spray painted the Victory Bell on the Blue Devils’ field and in the locker room, did nearly $10,000 in damage.

In tradition of the rivalry, the winning school gets to paint the Victory Bell in school colors on the field immediately following the game. Apparently the Tar Heels got a bit overzealous in their celebration. On Monday, both UNC head coach Larry Fedora and UNC athletic director Bubba Cunningham called their counterparts at Duke to apologize for the team’s actions.

Interior and exterior walls in the locker room as well as the carpet were painted. The letters “UNC” were also painted on a wall next to a door entering the facility and elsewhere in the locker room.

North Carolina’s victory ensured that Georgia Tech will represent the Coastal Division in the ACC Championship game.
