After revealing the unedited version of the seamlessly choreographed sequence of shoot-outs, chase scenes, and Indiana Jones-esque exploits, Naughty Dog helmed a Q&A session to answer any questions regarding Uncharted 4. Interestingly enough, during the discussion, the game’s developers confirmed that the single-player campaign mode of Nathan Drake’s last adventure will run at 1080p with a locked frame rate at 30fps.
Apparently, there was a lot of deliberation involved when it came to the game’s frame rates and visual quality issues. Regarding the matters, Uncharted 4’s co-lead designer Anthony Newman says:
When it comes to the subject, Naughty Dog’s developers definitely seemed to be in consensus. In fact, Uncharted 4’s other co-lead designer Kurt Margenau posits, “We want to have the best-looking game. To have it be consistent, locked 30fps. To me, a locked 30fps is way better than a variable 60fps.” Evidently, offering 60fps would be too problematic, as the feature would degrade the game’s overall quality, leading to a troublesome amount of optimizations in the environments that would negatively affect the flow of Uncharted 4’s story.
In addition to the conversation involving graphical capabilities, the team also made it known that Uncharted 4’s multiplayer is aiming for 60fps, which is the same statistic Naughty Dog said they had wanted for the mode during E3 2015. Not to mention, the developers disclosed that a beta for the multiplayer will go live prior to the game’s release in 2016. For those fans who wish to take part in the test, players can secure their spots by buying Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection that comes out this October for the PlayStation 4.
During the Q&A session, Naughty Dog also reported that Uncharted 4 will implement a Photo Mode. While in-depth details about this attribute are to be announced later, it’s a safe bet that the feature will be akin to other titles that allow players to take in-game screenshots and share them with fellow gamers.
Do you consider top-tier visual quality to be the most important aspect a video game should offer nowadays? If so, will Naughty Dog’s announcement of a locked 30fps frame rate deter you from purchasing Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End upon its release?
Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is slated for release some time in 2016 exclusively for the PlayStation 4.
