Regarding the figure, it represents Uncharted 4 copies sold to customers, instead of those shipped to retailers, and it also includes the game’s physical and digital sales as of May 16. And while many would argue that more than 2.7 million units is a respectable showing for the first week, it’s important to note that what is potentially the last game in the series failed to match the statistics of Uncharted 3’s reported global shipping of 3.8 million copies on its day-one release.

Of course, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception was put out much later into the PlayStation 3’s life cycle, which allowed the third entry a more sizeable audience by the time it came out, whereas Uncharted 4 was launched relatively early during the PS4’s existence. Nevertheless, with Sony having reportedly created its “largest ever” marketing campaign for the game, the company would have definitely preferred to have moved more units in order to offset some more of the costs for advertising.

Naturally, with Uncharted 4 having only been out for two weeks, there’s still potential for its sales to spike dramatically. After all, some fans of the action-adventure franchise could be waiting until Naughty Dog begins putting out the first components of its DLC plans for the title. Not to mention, there are always gamers who hold off on purchasing certain releases until studios get a handle of unforeseen problems encountered during post-launch periods. That said, if Naughty Dog remains diligent with updates like the most recent patch that provides campaign and multiplayer fixes, it will certainly capture the aforementioned markets in due time.

In any event, since fans and critics alike have been raving about the quality of Uncharted 4 since its release, the game is a must-buy for PlayStation 4 players. With such overwhelmingly positive reviews, it’s no wonder why its first week sales were so successful. Plus, taking into consideration the fact that the technically-inclined outlet Digital Foundry has called it a “technological powerhouse,” there’s little reason to avoid picking up a copy other than one not owning a PlayStation 4.
