Despite announcing that the release would receive a hefty delay until the tail-end of next year, it seems 2021’s big-screen Uncharted adaptation will actually be receiving a much earlier release date than first thought. While the film was allegedly going to hit screens on October 8, 2021, it seems the film will now air on July 16, 2021, instead.

While it seems strange that an announcement surrounding Uncharted’s release date would be altered so quickly, it’s worth remembering that the pandemic has completely thrown the cinematic schedule up in the air, leaving many studios to work around the chaos. Nonetheless, fans will be pleased to hear that they’ll get to see Nathan Drake’s first cinematic adventure sooner rather than later, especially with the slate of films hitting screens in 2020 and 2021 diminishing by the second.
As fans will no doubt know, this is far from the first release date change for the Uncharted movie since the idea was first announced back in 2009. Since then, a baffling number of directors have signed onto the project before departing not long after, including David O. Russel, Neil Burger, Seth Gordon, Shawn Levy, and, more recently, Travis Knight. The direction of the film has also changed drastically over its long stay in development hell, with the film originally seeing Mark Wahlberg as Nathan Drake alongside the likes of Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci.
It seems the film now has more of a solid direction, with Tom Holland stepping into the shoes of the charismatic adventurer, Wahlberg taking up the role of his wisecracking elderly mentor Sully, and Antonio Banderos allegedly acting as the film’s antagonist. The adaptation will be directed by Ruben Fleischer, the mind behind the likes of Venom and both Zombieland movies, while the story will supposedly follow the slightly darker tone of the series fourth and supposedly final entry, Uncharted: A Thief’s End.
The Uncharted movie will release on July 16, 2021.
