Said replacement is Travis Knight, who will be helming the production of the Uncharted movie when it starts early next year. Knight is a bit of a newcomer to directing big-budget live-action blockbusters, having cut his teeth on them just last year with the Transformers spinoff Bumblebee. Not that he’s inexperienced with filmmaking, however. As president and CEO of the stop-motion animation studio Laika, he was heavily involved in the creation of such films as Coraline, The Boxtrolls, and Kubo and the Two Strings, the latter of which he directed.

Knight is the latest in a surprisingly long list of directors that have been attached to Sony’s Uncharted film project. First there was David O. Russell (Silver Linings Playbook) all the way back in 2010, then after him was Neil Burger (Divergent) followed by Seth Gordon (King of Kong), Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum), and finally Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane).

It really seemed like Trachtenberg would finally be the one to see the long-gestating project to completion, as he even earned the approval of Uncharted co-creator Neil Druckmann. But as it stands now, it falls to Knight to see it through with help from producers Charles Roven, Alex Gartner and Avi and Ari Arad, while working off a script by Art Marcum, Matt Holloway, and Rafe Judkins.

Rounding off the list of key names is that of actor Tom Holland (Spider-Man: Homecoming), who’s set to play a younger Nathan Drake in a story set prior to the games. Interestingly enough, Uncharted is not the only troubled film project he’s involved in that started righting itself this week, as Sony and Disney announced today that a new Spider-Man movie set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be released in 2021, following a period of uncertainty between the two. Things are starting to look up for him.

Whether the same can said for the Uncharted movie as a whole remains to be seen. Despite being back on track with a director in tow, the Uncharted film is still slated to be hit theatres next December. That’s only fifteen months to put together what one assumes will be a massive blockbuster. For the sake of the fans who’ve waited so long an official movie, one can only hope that’s enough time for Knight, Holland, and the rest of the production crew to work some magic.

The Uncharted movie is expected to come out on December 18, 2020.
