According to the Hollywood Reporter, Sony has set the release date of the Uncharted film for December 18, 2020, coinciding with the release of Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story, and the sequel to Paramount’s Coming to America. The upcoming movie adaptation will star Spider-Man: Far From Home’s Tom Holland as a young Nathan Drake and will be directed by Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane), who took the role previously held by Shawn Levy.
Of course, given that the release date of the upcoming film is still a year and a half away, Sony still hasn’t revealed anything about the movie’s story, or how it will tie-in to the overall plot of the video game franchise. The latest screenplay is written by Jonathan Rosenberg and Mark Walker and as of the moment, the only detail we know is that the film will bring focus to a young Drake and his first encounter with Victor Sullivan, who eventually became the protagonist’s mentor.
Given that the film will focus on Drake’s younger years, it makes sense that Sony chose Holland to play the role, especially after the actor’s performances in major blockbusters including Spider-Man, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: End Game. However, it seems that Holland was not the only actor considered for the part after it was revealed several weeks ago that Ryan Reynolds was also in the running and almost got the role of Nathan Drake.
As for the role of Naughty Dog in the making of the film, the studio’s vice president Neil Druckman revealed that Naughty Dog knows nothing about the development of the film and does not have a voice in its making. However, it appears that Naughty Dog approves of Trachtenberg as the film’s director after Duckman said on Twitter that, “I’m a big fan of Dan. Excited to see what he does with Nathan Drake.”
The Uncharted movie is set to hit theatres on December 18, 2020.
